Risk Management & Job Hazard Analysis

Understanding risk management of a health and safety system for a work site is important. Participants will enhance their understanding and learn the legal requirements of risk management and job hazard analysis.


  • Review general principles of a health and safety system for a SWM site; including Due Diligence, Duty of Care, and compliance.
  • Identify and understand relevant Alberta Occupational Health and Safety terms as they relate to this topic on SWM sites.
  • Know the difference between risk assessment, job hazard analysis, and field assessment for a solid waste facility. Recognize the value of identifying hazards, assessing risk using a Risk Assessment Matrix to develop and implement controls to minimize risk while improving work methods and productivity.
  • Be introduced to tools that promote and improve communication for injury and loss prevention.
  • Be able to document the thought process as it relates to risk management and JHA on SWM sites.
  • Apply the ‘Risk Management’ process to deal with a wide variety of SWM situations/ scenarios and case studies to.
  • Consider and identify actual and potential hazards on a SWM site.
  • Evaluate the level of risk imposed by a hazard through application of the hierarchy of controls.
  • Complete a Job Hazard Analysis.

Instructor: John Wettstein

John is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) and a Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC). He is a workplace trainer, author and owner of Wettstein Safety Strategies Inc. John has developed and delivered customized training programs for the electrical industry, oil and gas, chemical process plants, mining and construction. John has delivered a similar course with EWMCE for the City of Regina.
